Rounds
13 & 14 saw the championship venture nore to visit the
Croft circuit just outside Darlington. It was my first visit
to the circuit and arriving in the dark on Friday night
due to bad traffic didn't help my plan for walking the track
and famiiarising myself with the required lines!
Thankfully
a good friend and fellow racer Ian Crisp came to the rescue
offering to show me his lines during the first few laps
of qualifying. This turned out to be invaluable as I was
able to slowly build up speed around the fast but technical
circuit finally qualifying 5th in class, but a disapointing
4 seconds off the pace of the class B leader.
Race
one saw what appears to be turning into a regular battle
re-commence! The now familiar sight of myself, Des Thresh
and Mark Astall battling amongst ourselves quickly got underway
after a great start pushing me up the order in the first
couple of corners. Some very close but fair racing followed
with our battle allowing the rest of the field to catch
up but thankfully not too quickly. A finish of 3rd place
was considerably better than expected and determined the
grid position for race 2.
A
very long wait for race two on the Sunday meant lots of
thinking time and I'd already decided to throw as much at
the circuit as I dare. As the pack entered the first corner,
contact between two or three cars at the front left one
car stranded and although I'd managed to drive around it
and position myself well up the field, the race was red
flagged and a re-start was required. As I waited for the
re-start I reminded myself of the need to push hard and
as the lights went out, I made possibly one of the best
starts this season taking both of the other class B cars
by the first corner and again driving around some wayward
cars in the first few corners. I now had the entire class
B (and some of class A) behind me and had moved from 10th
on the grid to 7th overall in a field of 18 cars.
Possibly
the longest 15minutes of my life follwed considering all
that was left to do was ensure that I didn't make a mistake
to take the class win. As I watched the battle for position
in my rear view mirror I realised they weren't gaining on
me so I tried not to look and just keep focused. The chequered
flag came (eventually!) and the first win in the new car
was in the bag! A superb result again for the guys at Assimil8
who again sponsored this entry.
